Photography is an art that comes from the desire to portray reality as it manifests. A truly talented photographer has the sensitivity and the ability to capture all the details, even the smallest ones that are often overlooked. Like other art forms, the passion for photography is often handed down.
This is what happened to Max D’Alessandro, who´s first contact with a camera came from taking care of his father´s film camera. His father, though an amateur photographer, was a very experienced one. He was the first to instill the love of photography to Max. As he grew older brother, Max and his older brother, who was also passionate about photography, would share technical information and what they´d learned over the years. Today Max has moved from film to digital, which he says has made a huge amount of difference to his photography as it allows him to capture all the details and moments he believes are essential to creating a meaningful image. ‘At any given event, I take at least 3,000 shots, with peaks of up to 6,000.´
Inspired by the work of a fellow photographer and friend, Max started to observe people in different ways, each time trying to understand what their history was, who they were in that moment, and what they wanted for the future. When Max decided to launch his own business he called it, ‘Scatti Spontanei’ aka ´Spontaneous Clicks.´ The name was chosen, says the photographer, ´to indicate the way I shoot photography – not only during the ceremony, but throughout the day, for every type of event, all year round.´
Precisely for this reason, Max does not have a traditional photographic studio; he has an office where he receives clients, and works on the post-production, but all of Max´s photos are taken in natural settings – nothing is staged.
Discretion and the ability to be silent and invisible during the ceremony are important aspects of his work. ‘I position myself in hidden places, which still allow me to have the same point of view of the guests.’ His images have a natural feeling of being present at the ceremony, thanks to Max´s choice of focal lenses similar to the view of the human eye.
Max prefers use natural light or small artificial lights fixed in the scene; also, in post-production he keeps photoshop to a minimum in favor of small, minor corrections that are invisible and unobtrusive. ‘The images must be so natural that by looking at it you feel as though you´re right back in the moment,’ says Max. His favorite moments to capture are the unguarded looks between the couple as they exchange love with their friends and family and each other.
