Kim and Chris met in 2014 on OKCupid. The dating website had labeled both of their profiles as a 99% match. It seems to us that Cupid knew what he was doing when he matched these two together! The couple quickly bonded over their love for the outdoors, science, cooking, and travel. Since then, they have had many adventures together. From witnessing a volcanic eruption in Costa Rica, to snorkeling with bioluminescent plankton in Thailand. Now they are excited to embark together on one of life’s greatest adventure: marriage!
Chris knew from the second date that he wanted to marry Kim! And so, time wasn’t really wasted. Chris has a 17 year old cat named Squeaky whom the couple both adore. One evening Squeaky approached Kim to cuddle with her, and there she was with a beautiful ring tied around her neck, hanging on a a ribbon.
When having a destination wedding, finding a dress that can travel with you across the globe is key! Luckily, Kim was not only able to find the perfect dress to travel abroad with, but it also looked fabulous on her! “I knew that I wanted a sheath gown that would travel well, and wanted something with pretty details. I basically had only one specific weekend to find and buy a dress (my mom was flying in from across the country.) I booked eight appointments in two different states knowing that it would be a wedding dress marathon. I tried on tons of dresses and knew that it would be difficult to choose between them, because I loved them all! Later we walked into the second to last boutique, and I heard the woman behind the counter speaking Italian. It turns out the shop was run by an Italian family, and when I told them about our plans for an Italian destination wedding, she said “I know just the dress for you!” She sent me ahead to start picking out a few dresses, and I immediately was drawn to a gorgeous beaded sheath gown by Maggie Sottero. As I had it in my hand, she came back and said, “That’s exactly the dress I had in mind!” It was absolutely the dress for me, and I bought it that day,” says, Kim. If that wasn’t enough to put a smile on her face, they were also able to customize a beaded veil to match the dress.
The Planning Process
“We chose Italy for our wedding location because it is a special place in both of our hearts.” says, Kim. Kim studied Italian Literature through college and has spent several summers in graduate school working alongside fellow geologists in Ferrara, Italy. Chris has traveled to Italy several times, and it has remained one of his all-time favorite destinations. “Both of us share an intense love for authentic Italian pizza and pasta. It only seemed right to spend this special day in our favorite part of the world!” says, Kim. The couple was able to plan their wedding in six months. This speedy planning process was made possible by their wedding planner Marlene Bellini from Il Pavone Bianco Wedding and Events. The couple consider themselves to be very detail-oriented people, and had specific ideas for how we envisioned the big day. Marlene was able to understand and execute every detail the couple wanted for their Italian wedding. From the flowers to the venue, it all came out exactly how they wanted!
The decision to get married near the water was always very clear to the both of them, even if they did not know the exact location until a few days before their wedding! However, they did know that they wanted to get married in Italy because it is a special destination to the two of them, and so from the beginning, they wanted their wedding to be a celebration of their love, their families, and of everything they love about Italy. Thanks to their wedding planner, they found this location that was completely remote. It was a nice surprise for the couple upon arrival, and they immediately fell in love with Lake Orta.
The daytime wedding reception was at the Palazzo Penotti Ubertini in Orta San Giulio, Italy. The couple chose this location because it was a beautifully restored 17th century villa off a charming cobbled street near the shores of Lake Orta. Plus, it was an added bonus that it was located right next door to the church where the couple had their wedding ceremony.
After a religious Filipino ceremony that recalled the origin of the bride, the festivities continued in private behind the walls of the Palace Ubertini. Guests enjoyed a tastey selection of specialties of the Piedmonte region, and were not disappointed. Since the couple was having a daytime wedding, they opted for live musicians instead of a DJ. There was a classical guitarist and mandolin player performing traditional northern Italian folk and classical music that was the perfect backdrop for the reception. In the late afternoon, the couple reserved a sunset boat cruise around Lake Orta for all of the wedding guests.
This Italian infused wedding was filled with culture, romance, and intimacy. Kim and Chris were able to share their love for Italy with their guests in this divine location that embodies everything we dream of for a destination wedding location!
