Day of the Dead Wedding Cakes to Celebrate “‘Til Death Do Us Part”

November 2nd marks the traditional Mexican holiday of the Day of the Dead, a centuries-old celebration of life and death. While some might find it a little creepy for a wedding celebration, it’s becoming increasingly popular as a wedding theme. These Day of the Dead-themed wedding cakes put a new spin on “’til death do us part.”

Contrary to what the morbid imagery suggests, the Day of the Dead is actually a joyous celebration observed with family and friends (hmm…kinda like a wedding). Brightly colored decorations, flowers and candies–mostly in the form of sugar skulls–are displayed in abundance during the celebration.

With its bright festive colors and offbeat imagery, we love the idea of a Day of the Dead wedding theme. A fun way to coordinate and plan your wedding, wedding themes are making a comeback for 2012. We can’t think of a better way to incorporate sugar skulls than on your wedding cake. Enjoy the eye candy!

With this theme, you could also opt for a Tim Burton-inspired purple, teal and black color scheme.

Bright colors are beautiful, but simple and vintage-inspired black, white and red might be more your fancy if you’re looking for a classic color scheme. We love the little skeleton bride and groom cake toppers, suggesting a bond that’s beyond eternal.

Of course, you could always go with Day of the Dead cupcakes, like these from Albuquerque bakery Cupcakeology. No cutting required, cupcakes are a cute and trendy alternative to a wedding cake.

I actually visited Mexico two years ago during this festival and the celebration was beautiful. Lots of flowers, bright colors…it’s actually the opposite of creepy. Love the wedding cakes!

The Tim Burton type cake looks like a mess that’s about to topple over. But I guess that’s the point.
