Backup plans for your outdoor weddings

Aaah, summer weddings – rosé wine, peep-toe shoes, BBQs, a backyard reception perhaps? But what if it rains? The weather is something not even the most organized bride can control, so what you need is a good backup plan.
If you’re having your wedding reception indoors at a private venue, you’re probably covered. However, it’s worth checking with your venue to see if there are awnings, temporary carpets, umbrella stands and a coat check available for guests who brave the inclement weather. Also ask if there is a discreet alternative entrance where the wedding party and/or guests can pull right up to the door in case it’s pouring.
Take into account things like slippery surfaces, choice of footwear and children! And if the forecast’s looking ominous, why not stock up on some wedding umbrellas for the bridal party and/or guests? You could change out of your heels and slip on some fun rain boots between the ceremony and reception, or cover up with a bridal raincoat. (Ingenious!)
If you’re having your reception in your back yard or at a public park, it might be worth getting in touch with your local church hall or social club to see if they would provide you with a backup location if the weather goes sour. Some venues may ask for a nominal booking fee, but it may well be money well spent.
You also need to think about photographs. If your dream is to have your photos taken on the grounds of a stately home or at the beach, try and switch your dream indoors, or discuss with your photographer the possibility of having your photos taken another, sunnier, day.

Don’t forget – you have the option of taking out wedding insurance to cover any mishaps. If you’re getting married during a rainy season, check with your insurance broker to see what types of weather-related problems are included!
